About the Lucy Monro Memorial Trust (LMMT)
Lucy Monro died on Friday 13th February 2015 in a tragic cycling accident during the Dubai Roadster’s Coast to Coast Challenge. She was riding as part of Team SWR (now renamed Team LMT), the cycling team she had founded a year and a half earlier and named after Stuff Worth Reading, another magazine that she published. She was a beautiful, inspiring, passionate, committed and talented leader, colleague, friend and devoted partner to Allan Greenfield.
The Lucy Monro Memorial Trust was established following Lucy’s death and existed for the public benefit in the advancement of education, human health (including the prevention or relief of sickness, disease, or human suffering) and animal welfare, through the provision of funding and direct aid, for immediate and tangible use. Between 2015 – 2021, LMMT supported six charities across these areas. LMMT has now been wound down.

Lucy loved her cycling team with a combination of passion and infectious enthusiasm. Team LMT rides on in her honour, with a local core of active members based in Dubai and past riders now dispersed around the world, but still proudly wearing the LMT jersey. About Lucy
Lucy Monro (née Townsend), was born and grew up in the UK, moving to the UAE – via a brief stint in Bahrain – in 1995. The UAE soon became her home and, in true Lucy style, she threw herself into life there with boundless energy. She travelled the length and breadth of the country and further afield, making her name as a respected journalist and photographer, consulting for CNN and reporting in print and broadcast on current affairs from around the world. She also became a regular contributor to Emirates Woman magazine and wrote several ground-breaking articles, tackling what often remain controversial and taboo subjects. As with everything in her life, Lucy relished pushing at established boundaries and championing the rights of those with a lesser voice.
An accomplished horsewoman in the UK, she began training and then competing in the UAE’s show jumping, showing and endurance circuits and soon garnered a wide base of loyal, local supporters. Her many successes included riding HH The Ruler of Sharjah’s Mujahid (Crusader) to victory in the stallion ridden championships in Abu Dhabi and, as part of the Royal Stables’ Endurance Team, Alandell Houdini to second place in the inaugural Ladies’ World Endurance Championships.
Lucy’s lifelong love for all things equestrian influenced much of her work and she contributed to many of the world’s major international equestrian titles as both writer and photographer. In 2003, her book “Spirits of the Sands: The Arabian Horse in its Homeland” was published – a magnificent production of beautiful photographs of the Arabian horses of the UAE. A year later, she co-founded Equestrio Arabia, a glossy magazine overflowing with reports and photographs from the world’s major equestrian events and polo in all its incarnations – from the modern day sport played on lush green fields, through traditional mountain polo to elephant and camel polo – not to mention features on adventure and luxury travel, lifestyle, art and photography. She continued to lead the magazine as its publisher and Editor in Chief until her untimely death in 2015.
